Zero-Downtime Maintenance and Upgrade for MySQL

Within the increasing reliability of hardware and software, database maintenance and schema upgrade is now the biggest cause of avoidable downtime in business-critical systems in businesses ranging from SaaS to social networking to large enterprises.

Robert's talk will start out by introducing basics of large-system maintenance, including maintenance window concepts and a discussion of the types of maintenance tasks that you need to perform as well as the problems you need to overcome in order to avoid outages. He will also introduce Tungsten clustering and explain how it creates highly available clusters using copies of standard MySQL databases.

Robert will show you specific procedures to:
  • Maintain/replace existing hardware
  • Add capacity to current systems
  • Migrate MySQL databases to new versions
  • Upgrade application schema

Tungsten 1.3 Release Candidate Now Available

New Tungsten Enterprise v. 1.3 Release Candidate

Enterprise Version 1.3 is a major release that includes a number of features to improve the flexibility, speed, and reliability of Tungsten clusters. Version 1.3 also includes a large number of bug fixes and minor improvements.

Tungsten version 1.3 includes significant architectural improvements to allow Tungsten Replicator to define custom replication flows, or pipelines as we call them, for native Tungsten Replication.

For MySQL users Tungsten 1.3 adds extensions to MySQL replication capabilities including correct replication of session variables, processing of LOAD DATA INFILE statements, a fragmentation protocol for large transactions, ability to read binlog events from MySQL master servers using the MySQL client protocol, and finally commands to start replication at a user-selected location in the binlog.

These greatly improve replicator reliability and reduce to a minimum data loss in the event of master failures.

For PostgreSQL users Tungsten 1.3 also greatly improves PostgreSQL 8.4 warm standby clustering and introduces alpha support for the upcoming PostgreSQL 9 log streaming and host standby feature. With PostgreSQL 8.4 you can use a second PostgreSQL database as a warm standby backup with automatic failover upon master failure. With upcoming PostgreSQL 9.0, you can direct read traffic to standby databases, thereby enabling scale out solutions for PostgreSQL.

This major Tungsten release also has completely updated documentation, including expanded description on cluster concepts, management procedures, and connectivity options.
